“Translating Culture for the Francophone and Anglophone Book Sectors"

This translation class will immerse students in the professional world of literary translators. The class will especially on the translation of culture-specific references found in contemporary Francophone and Anglophone literatures. It will aim to introduce students to the realities of distinct publishing contexts and how they inform translation choices. As part of the class, students will get to work together on a small collaborative translation project in which they will be confronted to the translation of culture-specific items and for which they will be asked to reflect on their experiences and explain their translation strategies in a translator’s journal.
